An accomplished bass-baritone, Garo Nichanian was born into a musical Armenian family. With his father, a sharaganaked (hymnologist) archpriest, as his first music teacher, he was influenced by the rare richness of the centuries-old traditional Armenian Church music.
Mr. Nichanian studied under the well-known Italian voice professor Lina Narducci. His naturally rich, robust voice has been mesmerizing audiences in major concert halls in Canada and the U.S. for many years with a vast repertoire of operatic arias, patriotic songs and romantic melodies in several languages. Concertgoers have also applauded his deeply resonant voice in solo recitals in Yerevan (1997, 2003 and 2005), in Paris (1999) and in Milan (2004).
Mr. Nichanian also has two recordings to his credit: "Andouni" and a CD entitled “That’s Life” which showcases his talents through international classics and Armenian selections.
Mr. Nichanian was the founding artistic director of the Friends of Armenian Culture which organized 23 classical concerts during 5 seasons (2000-2005) for the benefit of the Bolsahay Foundation. In 2001, Montreal’s Armenian Community celebrated the 1700th anniversary of Christianity in Armenia by presenting “The Birth of David of Sassoun”, a concert oratorio by Garbis Aprikian. Besides being one of the soloists, Mr. Nichanian was also the key coordinator/negotiator with the FACE Orchestra, Le Chœur de l’UQAM and the Armenian Community Choir. In March 2007, Garo Nichanian as Artistic Director, conceptualized and realized an unprecedented concert dedicated to mark the centennial of AGBU in Montreal, in which the FACE Symphony Orchestra played and accompanied soloists, in Armenian popular orchestral, vocal and choir works.
